ITIL certification tips to pass the exam

Certifications for ITIL range from Foundation to Master’s Qualification. The ITIL Foundation is the entry level credential in the ITIL Qualification Scheme. To obtain the ITIL Foundation certification, you must obtain a score of at least 65% on a 60-minute closed book exam, which consists of 40 multiple-choice questions.

After completing your Foundation certification, you can proceed to ITIL certification, which offers two tracks: service life cycle and service capability. You can also earn your ITIL Practitioner certification at any time after passing the Foundation exam.

Here, the ITIL experts offer advice on how to prepare for the ITIL Foundation certification exam.

Take a Course

There are several online courses that will help you be aware of everything you need to know before taking the ITIL Foundation certification exam. If you are taking the ITIL exam, you are probably already familiar with the general principles that guide the framework, but you still want to be prepared.

Don’t lose sight of the fact that the ITIL framework establishes a logical flow of how IT organizations can implement and manage the new services they want to implement. Many people tend to get lost in the shuffle during training, and skip some relatively easy questions on the exam,” says Cask’s Mark Smiley.

You can choose to study for the foundation exam yourself using Axelos study materials; the company even offers a mobile app for Android and iOS, so you can take practice exams and get study tips on the go.

Take an APMG sample exam

If you take a class through an accredited training program, the cost of your course may include one or two practice tests. However, if you are studying for the exam yourself, or simply wish to take more practice exams, APMG offers free samples of the ITIL Foundation exam.

“Take your time on the exam and answer the question that the exam asks, not the question that you expect the exam to ask, nor the question that you remember seeing on a practice exam,” notes Erika Flora, ITIL Foundation Instructor and President of Beyond20, an ITIL Training and Consulting Company.

The questions on the practice exams will not match the actual exam perfectly, so be sure to read each question carefully, both on the sample and actual exam

Schedule your exam while your knowledge is fresh

Once you have finished studying or your course has ended, be sure to schedule a date to take the exam immediately.

“The information you receive in courses accumulates in a very short time and the pace is fast. Do yourself a favor and take the exam a few days after completing the course, while the information is fresh in your head,” notes Smiley.

The cost of the exam ranges from $100 to $500, depending on where you take the exam. Some courses will include the exam fee in the overall cost of the course, especially if it’s an accredited program. If you pay for a course, check to see if a registration coupon for the exam is included.

Focus on what matters

As you study, you may feel overwhelmed with all that ITIL has to offer, especially outside your specialties. Try not to get bogged down in details, just focus on the key concepts of the framework.

At the end of the day, you can only be asked 40 questions, so make sure you understand the main concepts,” notes Flora.

But don’t just memorize the facts, only to forget them after the test; instead, try to learn the “why” behind the key concepts, Flora adds. Not only will it help you remember important information during the exam, but it will also help you bring ITIL practices into your organization more effectively after the exam.

Apply your real-world knowledge

If you are taking the ITIL Foundation certification exam, you are likely to be at a point in your career where you have had practical experience with the ITIL framework in an organisational environment. That knowledge will help you during the exam, because “many of the questions on the exam can be answered correctly simply by applying the common-sense logic you already have,” says Smiley.

“As you review a new concept, think critically about your work environment and consider how or why things are being done the way they are today. Ask yourself if this fits with the concepts you’re covering as you study. If not, then what would you need to change in your environment,” adds Christoper Kuhn, Director of Operations at OTRS, a service management service provider.
